Technical Abstract: The iodine value is still one of the most commonly applied indices in fatty acid chemistry. Its introduction was a milestone in analyzing fats and oils as well as describing their structure-property relationships, although it can be considered largely outdated because modern analytical methods such as gas chromatography and nuclear magnetic resonance supply more detailed and diverse information regarding fatty acid composition. This publication briefly describes the life and work of the scientist who introduced the iodine value as well as critically discusses the current technical use of the iodine value.
