Energy resources and other information

USGS carries out scientific studies of geological resources through two major programs:
Energy Resources Program
Geologically based energy resources, including oil, natural gas, coal, coalbed methane (CBM), gas hydrates, geothermal resources, uranium, oil shale, and bitumen and heavy oil
Mineral Resources Program
Nonfuel mineral potential, production, and consumption, as well as on the environmental effects of minerals

Other Federal agencies monitor safety and health and economic impacts of geological energy resources.

Coal mines

We are often asked for locations of coal mines in the US. While USGS has included some coal mine locations in its regional and local studies, there is no comprehensive collection of geographic data for coal mines. Some relevant information may be obtained from agencies listed below:
