To improve a product's environmental and human health profile, a formulator must be able to find suitable alternative ingredients. Those ingredients must have positive environmental characteristics, but also the right performance characteristics to be appropriate functional replacements. The DfE Screens for Solvents and Surfactants build upon this principle by defining the best in class solvents and surfactants for use in cleaning products. CleanGredients provides a list of chemicals that meet both of those screens.

The following table presents DfE's preliminary efforts in scoping out key substitute information for an additional functional class of ingredients, Builders/Chelators.
