New Journal Issue Covers Career of William F. Winter

Winter 2008 Journal of Mississippi HistoryThe latest issue of the Journal of Mississippi History is dedicated to the career of William F. Winter, governor of Mississippi from 1980 to 1984. Charles C. Bolton, University of North Carolina at Greensboro, served as guest editor. A chapter from Bolton’s forthcoming biography of Winter forms the first essay, “William F. Winter and the Politics of Racial Moderation in Mississippi.”

MDAH Awards Over $67,000 in Preservation Grants

The Department of Archives and History has awarded grants totaling more than $67,000 to fifteen preservation projects in Certified Local Government communities across Mississippi. Amounts range from $11,000 to replace the roof of the Strand Theater in Kosciusko to $300 for a National Register plaque in Como.

History of Choctaw Indians Topic of May 6 Program

As part of the History Is Lunch brown bag series, on Wednesday, May 6, Ken Carleton, tribal historian for the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians, tells the story of the Choctaw. Noon at the Winter Building. For more information email MDAH.

New Photograph Collection Added To Digital Archives

A collection of more than 1,000 black-and-white images taken during the first quarter of the twentieth century has been added to the MDAH Digital Archives. The Painter Collection features the work of Milton Painter, a self-taught photographer who produced excellent images of Friars Point and Coahoma County. Painter was especially interested in the Mississippi River and the steamboats that made stops in Friars Point.
