PLANO MAN INDICTED ON TAX CHARGES

United States Attorney Jane J. Boyle announced today that a federal grand jury sitting in Dallas, Texas returned a 20-count indictment against Freddie Lee Jones, charging that he willfully aided, assisted, and advised in the preparation and presentation of numerous false tax returns for 1996 through 1999, in violation of Title 26, United States Code, Section 7206 (2). Jones surrendered to authorities and has been released on a personal recognizance bond. Jones listed a Plano, Texas, address on the court order setting conditions of release. Trial has been set for September 9, 2002 before the Honorable United States District Judge Sidney A. Fitzwater.

The indictment charges that Jones, in preparing the false returns, falsely and fraudulently included deductions for cash contributions, non-cash contributions, Form 4797 losses, Schedule E Rental Losses, Schedule C Car and Truck expenses, Form 4684 Casualty Losses, Education Tax Credits, Schedule C Expenses, and Employee Business Expenses, knowing that these claimed deductions were false.

An indictment is an accusation by a federal grand jury and a defendant is entitled to the presumption of innocence until proven guilty. However, if convicted on all charges, Freddie Lee Jones faces a statutory maximum 60-year term of imprisonment and a $5 million fine.

United States Attorney Boyle commended the investigative work of the Internal Revenue Service - Criminal Investigation (IRS-CI), Dallas Field Office. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Lynn Hastings.
