Local Engineer Sentenced for Tax Evasion

United States Attorney Richard H. Stephens announced today that Larry Burl Frasier, age 60, of Alvarado, Texas, a former electrical engineer for Volt Technical Services, Aerotek Contract, and B&M Associates, companies in the aeronautical industry, was sentenced today to 37 months imprisonment for tax evasion and for failing to file United States Individual Income Tax Returns, Form 1040, for calendar tax years 1994 through 1997. The Honorable United States District Judge Barbara M.G. Lynn also ordered Frasier to pay restitution of $103,438.50.

On September 11, 2001, Frasier was found guilty by a jury in Dallas of four counts of Tax Evasion. Part of Frasier's tax evasion scheme involved him filing false IRS Form W-4s with his employers claiming he was exempt from paying taxes. He also hid assets from the IRS, after they filed a levy against him. Frasier had not filed a tax return since1981. During that time, Frasier worked for several aerospace companies around the country, always claiming he was not required to pay income tax. From 1994 through 1997, Frasier earned $472,156.20, yet claimed he didn't owe any income tax.

"As we approach April 15th, I remind everyone that tax evasion is a serious crime," said U.S. Attorney Richard H. Stephens. "Cases where individuals failed to file tax returns, or filed false tax returns, will be vigorously investigated and prosecuted by this office," Stephens said.

Today's sentencing demonstrates the government's continuing efforts to prosecute professionals, particularly doctors, lawyers, engineers and others who have failed to file tax returns or who have substantially under-reported their income on their tax returns. The investigation was conducted by Special Agents of the Internal Revenue Service - Criminal Investigation (IRS-CI), Dallas Field Office. Assistant United States Attorney Mike Uhl handled the prosecution of the case.
