Thursday - March 21, 2002

GREENVILLE - United States Attorney John Stuart Bruce announced that WALTER RANDOLPH WILLIAMS III was sentenced in federal court here on Wednesday, March 20, 2002, for federal income tax violations.

WILLIAMS pled guilty on December 17, 2001 to a Criminal Information that charged him with aiding and abetting in the preparation of false federal income tax returns. U. S. District Judge Malcolm J. Howard sentenced WILLIAMS to 34 months imprisonment and one year of supervised release. Also, he was ordered to pay restitution to the Internal Revenue Service in the amount of $22,117.79.

The factual basis for the guilty plea, presented in court by the prosecution, showed that: WILLIAMS prepared approximately 20 false federal income tax returns while he was in prison on a previous charge of filing false North Carolina state income tax returns. He prepared the false federal income tax returns on behalf of prison colleagues, and the returns reported income from false businesses. The income tax loss resulting from the returns totaled approximately $52,000.00.

Investigation of the case was conducted by agents of the Internal Revenue Service-Criminal Investigation. Michael J. Thomas, Special Agent in Charge of IRS-CI, Charlotte Field Office, stated that this sentencing should serve as a reminder to taxpayers that they are ultimately responsible for filing correct income tax returns with the IRS and that intentionally filing false returns with the IRS is a violation of criminal tax laws.
