MEDIA RELEASE

Stephen B. Pence, United States Attorney for the Western District of Kentucky, announced today that James P. Lyles, an optometrist, of Calvert City, Kentucky, pled guilty to three counts of filing false income tax returns for the years 1995, 1996 and 1997.

Lyles faces maximum potential penalties of three years imprisonment for each count and a maximum fine of $750,000. The Court may also impose a term of supervised release of up to three years for each count. Lyles admitted that he intentionally understated his income and overstated his business deductions during the three-year period from 1995-1997.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Candace G. Hill and Robert J. Kilmartin, and it was investigated by the Internal Revenue Service Criminal Investigative Division.

The plea was entered before Thomas Russell, Judge, United States District Court, Paducah, Kentucky. Lyles is scheduled to be sentenced before Judge Thomas Russell on May 12, 2003, at 11:30 a.m. in Paducah, Kentucky.
