GOVERNMENT SEIZES RETIREMENT ACCOUNT Longview Doctor Failed to Pay $250,000 Fine as Ordered United States Attorney Jane J. Boyle announced today that the U.S. government has seized a retirement account belonging to Dr. Norman Q. Seid of Longview, Texas. Seid, 51, was convicted in 2002 of Subscribing to a False Tax Return Under Penalties of Perjury and was sentenced to 18 months imprisonment, 12 months of probation, and a $250,000 fine. Seid appealed his conviction and the United States Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals upheld the conviction. Seid has completed his imprisonment and is currently serving his probationary sentence, however, he has failed to pay the fine. The United States Attorney's Office became aware of Seid's retirement account and filed a Writ of Garnishment with the District Court requesting seizure of the account. The District Court granted the writ and last week ordered liquidation of the account by the financial company managing it in order to satisfy the fine. The U.S. will receive $288,197.82 from the seizure which represents the fine, plus interest and a 10 % surcharge which is added to cover the cost of litigation. U.S. Attorney Boyle recognized Assistant United States Attorney Mattie Peterson Compton for her efforts in enforcing compliance with the Court's order. # # # |
