BIRMINGHAM RESIDENT INDICTED IN TAX SCHEME

BIRMINGHAM, AL - United States Attorney Alice H. Martin of the Northern District of Alabama and Gail J. Kenney, Acting Special Agent in Charge, Internal Revenue Service-Criminal Investigations announce today that MONIQUE HALL has been indicted by a federal grand jury for filing false claims for tax refunds with the Internal Revenue Service.

HALL, 38, of Birmingham, Alabama, was charged in a three-count indictment filed today at U. S. District Court in Birmingham. The indictment alleges that Hall caused false tax returns in her name to be filed with the IRS in 2000, 2001, and 2002, and that she received over $12,000.00 in tax refunds based on her false claims.

The punishment for these offenses upon conviction is up to $750,000 in fines, 15 years imprisonment, special assessment fees of $300, restitution to the United States of the total amount of false claims, and a period of supervised release following imprisonment.

“Everyone knows that making up dependents, paying persons for the use of their Social Security number, and falsifying one’s marital status on tax returns is against the law,” stated U.S. Attorney Alice H. Martin. “The IRS is vigilant in their investigation of such blatant schemes. My office will vigorously act to enforcement our nation’s tax laws.”

Assistant United States Attorney Pat Meadows is prosecuting this case.

Members of the public are reminded that the indictment contains only charges. A defendant is presumed innocent of the charges and it will be the government’s burden to prove a defendant’s guilt beyond a reasonable doubt at trial.
