FORMER FINNEY COUNTY MAN SENTENCED TO FEDERAL PRISON FOR PREPARING FRAUDULENT TAX RETURNS IN KANSAS
WICHITA, KAN. – A former Finney County man has been sentenced to federal prison for preparing fraudulent tax returns in Kansas.
Delbert De Leon, 49, La Junta, Colo., was sentenced during a hearing before U.S. District Judge J. Thomas Marten in Wichita.
“Mr. De Leon was sentenced to 8 months in prison, followed by 8 months confinement to his home with electronic monitoring,” said U.S. Attorney Eric Melgren.
In November 2005, De Leon pleaded guilty to charges he prepared fraudulent federal income tax returns for the years 2000 and 2001. He admitted filing false tax returns while acting as a paid preparer of taxes for three other persons: Carlos Arias, Santana Ramos and Robert F. Asebedo. The returns contained false or inflated Schedule A income deductions that resulted in increased or fraudulent tax returns. He also admitted that he “guessed” at fraudulent tax deduction figures that he thought would not cause the Internal Revenue Service to question the deductions.
Melgren commended the work of IRS-Criminal Investigation, which investigated the case, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Alan Metzger, who prosecuted the case.
