WASHINGTON, DC - The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) today announced a grant of $1.4 million to the Amy Biehl Foundation Trust. The grant will enable the Trust to expand its successful violence interventions in the Western Cape region of South Africa.

The Amy Biehl Foundation Trust was established to honor the memory of Amy Biehl, a Fulbright scholar whose life was claimed in South Africa's Gugulethu Township in 1993.

"Weaving a Barrier Against Violence" is a campaign by the Amy Biehl Foundation in the Western Cape region of South Africa. USAID provided a grant to the Foundation in September 1997 to support its work to reduce community violence in townships and settlements around Cape Town. The Foundation adopts a multidisciplinary approach to supporting disadvantaged youth and their families to occupy their lives more productively. Activities include skills development, recreational opportunities, academic support and teaching basic health care. A cornerstone for the Foundation is the community bakery program, through which it seeks to support its core activities. Total USAID support for the foundation's strategies to deter violence are now at $2,345,000.

"We must not write-off another generation of South Africa's youth," warned Peter Biehl. His wife Linda, agreed. He outlined the need to "nourish youth for tomorrow." The new USAID support will expand the Foundation's programs into additional communities, with the goal of helping communities of the region meet their demands to "nourish" the minds and bodies of young South Africans and provide motivation to live beyond the violence.

Linda and Peter Biehl are residents of La Quinta, California. They are originally from Illinois.

The U.S. Agency for International Development is the U.S. government agency that funds development and disaster assistance across the world.
