Research Project: EXTENSION AND OUTREACH FOR ON-FARM DEMONSTRATION TRIALS OF ALTERNATIVE FUMIGANTS IN ORNAMENTAL CROP PRODUCTION IN FLORIDA

Location: Subtropical Plant Pathology Research

Project Number: 0500-00044-020-14
Project Type: Specific Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: May 27, 2008
End Date: May 31, 2009

Objective:
To conduct grower extension and outreach programs for on-farm demonstration trials.

Approach:
The research trials are to be conducted in two locations over two cropping cycles. Two crops will be studied, one at each location. Trials on delphinium will be in Hobe Sound, FL, and trials on caladium will be in Zolfo Springs, FL. Treatments at each location will be similar. Research will focus on the use of methyl iodide (MIDAS), and dimethyl disulfide (Paladin) as alternatives to methyl bromide. Methyl bromide controls and experimental materials will be applied by commercial custom applicators. Outreach activities will focus on summarized research results from both locations and will relate to the different application procedures and production systems used for each crop.
