Research Project: DEVELOPMENT OF MID OLEIC, LOW-LINOLENIC, LOW-SATURATED SUBSTITUTES FOR PARTIALLY HYDROGENATED OIL

Location: Soybean and Nitrogen Fixation Research

Project Number: 6645-21000-026-29
Project Type: Specific Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Apr 21, 2008
End Date: Feb 28, 2009

Objective:
Develop productive soybeans in maturity groups IV-V having less than 4% 16:0 and less than 3% 18:3. Incorporate higher oleic acid (18:1) genes into low saturated, and low linolenic breeding lines and populations.

Approach:
Breeding lines will be selected in the F4 generation from populations that segregate for mid-oleic fatty acid, low saturated fatty acids and/or low linolenic acid. Individual plants will be tested for oil composition. Progeny from plants that have the targeted traits will be field tested to determine agronomic performance and disease reaction. Desirable lines will be selected for evaluation in replicated plots at multiple locations in Maryland to determine productivity and adaptation. Productive lines will be advanced for regional testing to determine broad adaptation and potential for release as new cultivars.
