Research Project: IMPROVING SHORT FIBER MEASUREMENT OF THE ADVANCED FIBER INFORMATION SYSTEM (AFIS)

Location: Cotton Quality Research

Project Number: 6655-41440-003-10
Project Type: Reimbursable

Start Date: Jan 01, 2008
End Date: Dec 31, 2008

Objective:
Improving the ability of the AFIS to measure short fiber could provide the textile industry a rapid and more reliable instrument as well as a standard which is as important for breeding and textile research as it is for the marketing and utilization of cotton.

Approach:
Project will utilize a first generation AFIS¿ retrofitted with current software. Six cotton bales with specified HVI¿ properties (length of 1.00, 1.10, and 1.20 in and micronaire of 3.8, 4.4, and 5.0) will be tested. Card wire and standardized settings will provide the baseline for fiber testing. This study will evaluate various combinations of preconditioning, carding segments, and pinned rollers to minimize fiber breakage.
