Research Project: PRODUCTION OF TRANSGENIC COMMERCIAL CITRUS VARIETIES RESISTANT TO HLB

Location: Horticulture and Breeding Research

Project Number: 6618-21000-013-03
Project Type: Trust

Start Date: Jan 29, 2008
End Date: Jun 30, 2009

Objective:
Develop transgenic citrus varieties resistant to Huanglongbing (HLB).

Approach:
1. Identify and obtain gene constructs of the most promising antimicrobial peptides/proteins (AMPs) and other resistance genes to produce HLB resistant citrus varieties. 2. Transform the most popular citrus scion and rootstock cultivars with these gene constructs and regenerate plants. 3. Multiply transgenic citrus selections and conduct laboratory and greenhouse tests to identify those possessing the most promising levels of resistance to HLB. 4. Collaborate with the Florida industry to conduct commercial field trials with the most promising HLB-resistant varieties.
