Research Project: EDUCATIONAL OUTREACH OF METHYL BROMIDE ALTERNATIVES FOR STRAWBERRY AND VEGETABLE PRODUCTION IN FLORIDA AND GEORGIA

Objective:
1. Update cooperative extension agents and extension faculty on fumigant application methods, equipment and calibration, upcoming changes in buffer zones and PPE requirements, new research information regarding alternative fumigants, fumigant ¿ plastic mulch interactions, and fumigant ¿ herbicide combinations

Approach:
Intensive, hands-on, in-service training for cooperative extension agents and extension faculty will be conducted at a central location over a multiple day period. The training will consist of classroom lectures by several experts on soil fumigation, vegetable crop production and pest management and interactive field demonstrations of fumigant applications. Subject area will include alternative fumigants, application equipment and methods, plastic films, weed control and herbicide management, nematode management, disease management, cover crops and development of integrated pest management programs for soilborne pests.
