Research Project: SEED PRODUCTION POTENTIAL OF P-2 SEEDED BERMUDAGRASS IN CALIFORNIA

Location: Crop Genetics and Breeding Research

Project Number: 6602-21000-020-04
Project Type: Nonfunded Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 05, 2007
End Date: Aug 31, 2012

Objective:
Evaluate the seed production potential of P-2 seeded bermudagrass in Imperial Valley, California.

Approach:
Barenbrug USA has established the crossing block with clones of the different lines of the P-2 synthetic. The crossing block is 54x34 feet in dimension. It contains 50 clones each of the 8 lines. Barenbrug is responsible for maintenance of crossing block, harvesting and cleaning of the seed. The seed harvested from the crossing block will be provided to ARS for forage trials in Georgia. Barenbrug USA will organize forage trials with seed in other states (e.g. Alabama, Louisiana, Texas, and California). Barenbrug will also use the seed for large scale seed production trials (1 acre). Barenbrug will conduct the large seed production trials and provide information to ARS on commercialization potential of the synthetic cultivar.
