Research Project: COOPERATIVE DEVELOPMENT OF WHEAT GERMPLASM WITH IMPROVED RUST RESISTANCE

Location: Plant Science Research

Project Number: 6645-22000-016-05
Project Type: Specific Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Aug 15, 2007
End Date: Sep 30, 2009

Objective:
The objective of this cooperative research between Virginia Tech and the USDA/ARS is to identify new sources of resistance to stem rust of wheat and to incorporate those sources into adapted wheat breeding lines.

Approach:
Virginia Tech University will obtain sources of stem rust in cooperation with the USDA/ARS Plant Science Research Unit (PSRU) in Raleigh, NC and introgress those sources of resistance into advanced breeding lines of soft red winter wheat. Segregating populations developed from the introgressions will be evaluated phenotypically and genotypically in cooperation with scientists in the PSRU. Data and germplasm will be shared between ARS and Virginia Tech scientists.
