Research Project: ON-FARM DEMONSTRATION TRIALS OF ALTERNATIVES TO METHYL BROMIDE FOR CUT FLOWER PRODUCTION

Location: Subtropical Plant Pathology Research

Project Number: 0500-00044-020-04
Project Type: Specific Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jun 15, 2007
End Date: Sep 30, 2009

Objective:
The objective of the research is to evaluate alternatives to methyl bromide on a scale that is adequate for cut flower grower cooperators and researchers to determine feasibility of adoption.

Approach:
A replicated, repeated on farm research trial will be conducted to compare the standard methyl bromide application with methyl iodide and other materials as they are granted Experimental Use Permits or registrations from the Environmental Protection Agency. Materials will be applied by a commercial fumigant applicator, as this is the industry standard. Replicated plots will be sampled for nematodes, weeds, and pathogens before fumigation, after fumigation, and during the cropping cycle. The grower cooperator will assess yield and quality.
