Research Project: MAPPING CROP RESIDUE USING NASA'S REMOTE SENSING ASSETS

Location: Southeast Watershed Research

Project Number: 6602-13000-022-06
Project Type: Reimbursable

Start Date: Apr 01, 2006
End Date: Dec 31, 2007

Objective:
Evaluate the uncertainty in RUSLE estimated soil loss and SCI using traditional model input parameters at multiple locations; investigate pre-existing crop residue algorithms and determine the most robust image-derived algorithms that can consistently quantify crop residue cover distributions within a watershed; evaluate the uncertainty in RISLE estimated soil loss and SCI using satellite derived model input parameters at multiple locations; and develop a plan to integrate image products into the RUSLE and transfer results to operational use.

Approach:
Leading the review effort on the current USDA/NRCS procedures, performing field data collection and analysis; integrating ground truth and remotely sensed data to develop crop residue cover estimates/maps; and providing expertise in integrating satellite derived residue cover estimates into existing models.
