Research Project: STRUCTURE-ACTIVITY STUDIES OF KNOWN ARTHROPOD REPELLENTS USING CODESSA

Location: Mosquito and Fly Research Unit

Project Number: 6615-32000-043-02
Project Type: Specific Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Aug 05, 2004
End Date: Jul 14, 2009

Objective:
The objective of this cooperative research project is: To predict the structures of novel chemical repellents for mosquitoes and flies that bite humans, by computerized evaluation of a large USDA-exclusive data base consisting of two classes of known and tested repellents. Analyze a data base of organic compounds (piperidines and oxazolidines), and the synthesis of a small amount of organic compounds to be tested as insect repellents.

Approach:
Analyze a data base of organic compounds that were previously synthesized and tested against specific insect species for their repellent character, and predict new structures that should be active. A sophisticated modern computer system, CODESSA PRO, will be employed to develop quantitative structure activity/property relationships (QSAR/QSPR) to define and improve mosquito and fly chemical repellents. Modify known procedures to synthesize a series of specific structurally related organic piperdine amides in the amount of 50 to 100 mg each, purify for delivery to CMAVE laboratory.
