Research Project: RISK ASSESSMENT & INTEGRATED TERMITE MANAGEMENT STRATEGIES FOR HAWAII AND THE PACIFIC BASIN

Location: Imported Fire Ant and Household Insects

Project Number: 6615-32000-041-12
Project Type: Specific Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jul 14, 2004
End Date: Jul 14, 2009

Objective:
(1) Evaluate insecticides as bait toxicants, and physical and chemical methods for pesticide-reduced integrated management. (2)Develop regional survey-based risk assessment models of termite distributions in Hawaii and the Pacific focusing on the hazards posed by new introductions. (3)Detecting and mapping of localized termite populations to develop decision support for community-based integrated management systems.

Approach:
(1) Complete studies of termiticide longevity via lab bioassays of field-aged treated soils; evaluate potential physical and chemical methods of control, including resistant building materials to reduce pesticide use; (2)Conduct spatially-based surveys of termite distributions in the Hawaiian Islands and other Pacific Basin locations, retaining termite samples for genetic and/or hydrocarbon analyses; such data will be used to develop predictive risk assessment models; and (3) develop decision-support algorithms using a GIS-based system to integrate biological, behavioral, and environmental variables.
