Mission Statement

fireantwheel00_drop.jpgThis research unit develops integrated management strategies for imported fire ants and other emerging urban pest insects.  Emphasis is on developing newer, safer methods and better strategies for controlling these pests with less reliance on traditional pesticides.  Research supports the general public, agricultural producers, the pest control industry, medical practitioners, and state and federal agencies such as Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, Environmental Protection Agency, Department of Defense, and the Department of Interior.  Areas of research include the development of areawide control strategies, biological control agents, baits, and repellents; ecology and biodiversity; population dynamics; toxicology and molecular biology; and pheromone chemistry and chemical ecology.
