Microbial Source Tracking Guide Document (PDF) (133 pp, 2.12 MB) (EPA/600/R-05/064) June 2005

The purpose of this guide is to provide scientists, engineers, and environmental managers with a comprehensive, interpretive analysis of the current and relevant information (based on lab and field data) related to microbial source tracking (MST).

Descriptions of various MST approaches, data collection tools, data analysis procedures, method application, performance standards, and assumptions and limitations associated with MST will be provided.

This guide was written by a diverse group of professionals from academia and government agencies. Regional and state environmental professionals were consulted during different stages of this effort. Many of the contributing authors are recognized leaders in MST and applied environmental microbiology.

While the information herein presented is contemporary, it should be noted that MST is an ever-changing field; the reader is encouraged to consult the scientific literature frequently.
