Of Current Interest...10/1/2008 – Ohio Water Science Center Director, Jim Morris, presented information on the USGS Oceans Research Priority Plan at the Great Lakes Beach Association meeting in Porter, Indiana, September 15-17. Also at that meeting, Donna Francy organized a workshop on the use of predictive models at beaches and presented data on the testing of rapid analytical methods at 7 Lake Erie beaches. The GLBA is presently made up of beach managers, regulators, scientists, public health officials, and others interested in beach monitoring issues from Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, and Canada. 5/16/2008 – The USGS announces a new collaborative project aimed at providing information to beach managers to help decide whether to post advisories or close beaches to protect public health.
