Irrigated Agriculture Land-Use Study: Ogallala Formation - central High Plains
Objective:
Determine the occurrence and
distribution of water-quality constituents in recently recharged ground
water beneath irrigated agriculture in the central High Plains aquifer
(Ogallala Formation).
Approach:
Randomly locate and drill 30
wells in the central High Plains aquifer (Ogallala Formation) where irrigated agriculture is greater than
30 percent of the land use and where the depth to water is less than
200 feet (parts of KS, OK, and TX) (see map).
Sample each well once.
Timing:
Drilling begins March, 2000; sampling in July 2000.
Targeted Constituents:
Physical parameters, major ions, nutrients,
pesticides, dissolved organic carbon (DOC), tritium, and nitrogen isotopes.
