A National Network to Reduce Gun Crime
Project Safe Neighborhoods represents the national commitment of President Bush and Attorney General Ashcroft to reduce gun crime in America by coordinating with existing local programs which target gun crime and by providing those programs with the additional tools necessary for them to be successful. Federal funding will be used to hire new federal and state prosecutors, support investigators, provide training, and develop and promote community outreach efforts. The effectiveness of Project Safe Neighborhoods is based on the ability of federal, state, and local agencies to cooperate in a unified assault led by the United States Attorney in every one of the 94 federal judicial districts across America.
Through unprecedented partnerships among federal, state, and local law enforcement and community agencies, each United States Attorney will implement the five core elements of Project Safe Neighborhoods' addressing the specific gun crime problems in his or her district. Project Safe Neighborhoods' five core elements: partnerships; strategic planning; training; community outreach; and accountability. The goal is to create safer neighborhoods by reducing gun violence and by sustaining the reduction.
Project Safe Neighborhoods
Project Safe Neighborhoods in the Northern District of Georgia uses data collection and analysis to design targeted strategies and interventions that flow directly from that research driven analysis. Emory University's Rollins School of Public Health is the strategy's research partner.
Atlanta Project Safe Neighborhoods concentrates on Atlanta Police Department (APD) gun crime hot spots. Presently in Atlanta, Project Safe Neighborhoods operates with prosecutors from the Atlanta City Solicitor's Office, the Fulton County District Attorney's office, and the United States Attorney's office, all of them coordinating their efforts. Project Safe Neighborhoods has funded prosecutors for the City of Atlanta and for Fulton County. These prosecutors work directly with a group of law enforcement officers, agents, and analysts from APD, the Atlanta Department of Corrections, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco,& Firearms (ATF), the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), the Georgia Department of Corrections, the Georgia Board of Pardons and Parole, and the High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA) evaluating data and intelligence and deciding upon interventions. A much larger group of collaborative partners works on overall enforcement strategies and broader interventions. This group is developing knowledge of the community, faith-based ministries, and service providers within the target beats and will develop intervention strategies that involve all of these groups.
Project Safe Neighborhoods will soon operate throughout the district. Prosecutors funded by Project Safe Neighborhoods will be in place in Cherokee County, Douglas County, Piedmont Judicial Circuit, and Tallapoosa Judicial Circuit.
