Increased and Improved Educational Opportunities for Youth
USAID activities are specifically targeted to meet critical gaps in access to and quality of the basic education system, in order to achieve Education for All - Fast Track Initiative (EFA-FTI) and Poverty Reduction Strategy (PRS) goals, and to develop a more coherent strategy for the development of Honduras' workforce.
USAID
builds on the successes that have already been achieved,
which include:
- the development of the EDUCATODOS alternative
education program through the 9th grade;
- the expansion of
the private-sector based vocational education program;
- the
development of pilot programs to improve the quality of
early primary education and reduce student failure rates;
and
- the development of innovative, high quality, and low
cost pre-school education alternatives.
Improvements in
the delivery of services are planned by focusing on increased
efficiency and quality in the education sector. Other improvements
are targeted through reforms involving the private sector
incentives and alliances to revitalize the public sector's
human resources and efforts in workforce development. USAID
also participates in the Centers for Excellence in Teacher
Training (CETT) which is a presidential initiative for the region
(Central America and the Dominican Republic) for the development
of teaching strategies and materials to improve reading
and writing skills in the first three years of primary school.
