On October 3rd, Ko-ichi Nakamura from the Geological Survey of Japan visited Debbie Hutchinson, Bill Dillon, Bill Waite, and Bill Winters to discuss gas-hydrate research. Dr. Nakamura gave a short presentation about results from the GEOMAR cruise to Hydrate Ridge, off the Pacific Northwest, including a spectacular video of gas venting from one of the active seeps that was monitored during the cruise.

On October 12th, Carolyn Ruppel (Georgia Tech University) and Andy Shepard (NOAA-NURP in Wilmington, NC) visited the Woods Hole Field Center to discuss recent cruise results and a potential Ocean Exploration proposal with Debbie Hutchinson, Bill Dillon, Bill Waite, and Bill Winters. Carolyn had just returned from a submersible cruise to some of the remarkable chemosynthetic vent communities on the Blake Ridge Diapir (drilled during ODP Leg 164). She and Andy discussed these results and the possibility of submitting a joint proposal to the NOAA Ocean Exploration Program for further mapping and characterization of the site. Andy also spent time discussing deep-reef and habitat research off Florida and USGS participation in a NOAA multibeam cruise to Oculina Bank in May 2002 with Kathy Scanlon.

Peter Slagbrand, marine geologist with the Geological Survey of Sweden, visited the WHFC on September 28th to learn more about the USGS seafloor-mapping program. After a brief welcome from Debbie Hutchinson, Peter spent the afternoon visiting with Bill Schwab and Bill Danforth to discuss common issues in their fields. Peter also toured the USGS facilities.

Alexei Milkov (Texas A&M University) visited the WHFC lab on October 5th for discussions about gas hydrates in the Gulf of Mexico with the "Hydrate Bills" (Bill Dillon, Bill Winters, and Bill Waite), along with Debbie Hutchinson and Dave Mason. Alexei gave a talk at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) about his work regarding processes and gas-hydrate distribution on the central Gulf of Mexico slope. We encouraged his interest in applying for a post-doctoral fellowship at WHOI.
