USGS Mendenhall Post-doctoral Research Fellowship
The Mendenhall Fellowship Program honors Walter C. Mendenhall, the fifth director of the USGS. Now in its second year, this post-doctoral research program provides the opportunity for the selected fellow to conduct concentrated research in association with a selected member of the USGS professional staff. This year, I have been awarded one of the two-year fellowships. I am conducting my research at the Woods Hole Field Center under the guidance of Brad Butman and Chris Sherwood. My research involves the development, testing, and application of numerical hydrodynamic and sediment-transport models. A long-term goal of the USGS is to promote development, distribution, and application of a sediment-transport model that is community-based with contributions from USGS, academic, and industry cooperators. These models will be applied in the coastal and marine environment and can be used to design field experiments, interpret observations, isolate important physical processes, and improve our understanding of circulation patterns and dynamics. I greatly appreciate this research opportunity and strongly look forward to the challenges ahead.
