China - Floods

Assistance Provided: 6/16/2005

Brief Description:
Heavy rains in Hunan, Guizhou, Gangxi, Chongqing, and Sichuan provinces in southern China and Heilongjiang Province in northeast China have affected 15 million people, killed at least 232 others, and destroyed 137,000 homes since the end of May. According to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), the Ministry of Civil Affair's reports that total damages have reached nearly $382 million and 510,000 hectares of farmland have been flooded. According to the Government of China's Flood Control and Drought Relief headquarters, weather forecasts predict this season's floods will be more extensive than in previous years.
