"No Child Left Behind Program Not Unfunded Mandate, Wamp Says"
An article in today's Chattanooga Times Free Press finds U.S. Rep. Zach Wamp taking issue with recent assertions that No Child Left Behind is an unfunded mandate. Following are excerpts from the article, which is titled "No Child Left Behind program not unfunded mandate, Wamp says."
"'I think to say that No Child Left Behind is an unfunded mandate for the states, when in fact it is voluntary and the state of Tennessee asked to be involved with it and submitted a plan, is both unfair and inaccurate,' Rep. Wamp said."
"Rep. Wamp also said there have been increases in federal education funding for Tennessee 'in every category' as a result of the act, which President Bush signed into law in January 2002."
