*U.S. Census Bureau Releases Research Data from Study on Multiyear Estimates

The Census Bureau today released research data on single and multiyear estimates in preparation for the 2008 release of official 3-year estimates. The Multiyear Estimates Study is being conducted to test planned production methods and to help data users begin to understand the characteristics of multiyear estimates.

A total of 14 data sets were created for this study using data from 1999 to 2005: three 5-year estimates, five 3-year estimates, and six 1-year estimates. Data profiles that include demographic, social, economic, and housing characteristics are available for a broad set of geographic areas in 34 ACS Test counties. The data profiles display the estimated totals and estimated percentages along with their associated margins of error for each single and multiyear estimate. The broad set of geographic areas include counties, county place parts, Minor Civil Divisions (MCDs), school districts, American Indian Areas, Public Use Microdata Areas (PUMAs), Zip Code Tabulation Areas (ZCTAs), tracts and block groups.

In addition to the online data profiles, background information about the study, methodology documentation, quality measures, and a set of questions and answers are available on the ACS web site under "Advanced Methodology." Please visit the new section at http://www.census.gov/acs/www/AdvMeth/Multi_Year_Estimates/overview.html to access the information.

Note: It is important to recognize that the estimates included in this study have not undergone the subject matter and technical review required for standard ACS data products. For this reason, these estimates are not official estimates. We strongly suggest users consult with Census Bureau staff before drawing conclusions or taking actions based on these data.

The ACS is a key component of the Census Bureau's 2010 Decennial Census Program, which also consists of early planning and modernization of geographic operations and a short-form only for the 2010 Census.
