Research Project: EVALUATION FOR THE INTEGRATION OF A VIRTUAL ET SENSOR BASED ON VIIRS AND PASSIVE MICROWAVE SENSORS INTO THE ANNAGNPS POLLUTION MODEL

Location: Watershed Physical Processes Research Unit

Project Number: 6408-13000-018-32
Project Type: Reimbursable

Start Date: May 01, 2007
End Date: Sep 30, 2008

Objective:
To develop and quantitatively evaluate a procedure to determine evapotranspiration data, as derived from satellite instrumentation that estimates land surface temperature (GPM) and vegetative indices (VIIRS), as input into the Annualized Agricultural Non-Point Source (AnnAGNPS) pollution model.

Approach:
ARS will utilize the research facilities of the ARS National Sedimentation Laboratory to conduct experimental and modeling studies to document the effectiveness of data derived from satellite instrumentation that estimates evapotranspiration from land surface temperature (GPM) and vegetation indices (VIIRS), as input into the AnnAGNPS pollution model. A comparison will be performed on the effects of model performance when utilizing satellite derived data or land based data obtained for a large watershed system. Results will be used to evaluate the future usage of satellite remote-sensing data for application of AnnAGNPS on watershed systems.
