Recent Hydrologic Conditions -- HawaiiLatest update August 8, 2008
Puu Kukui Rain Gage, MauiPuu Kukui rain gage is at the summit of the West Maui Mountains at an altitude of 5,771 ft (gage photo). Monthly records for the rain gage, measured by Maui Land & Pineapple Company, Inc., are available since 1928. The USGS has been measuring rainfall at Puu Kukui since September 2004. The average yearly rainfall at the gage since 1928 is about 371 inches. Rainfall for July 2008 (26.7 inches) can be compared with island-wide rainfall data recorded by the National Weather Service. This station is operated by Matt Wong of the Maui field office in cooperation with the National Weather Service and is equipped with a satellite transmitter delivering rainfall updates every hour (Go to real-time website for this gage.). Recent rainfall record compared with historical data The monthly maximum and minimum data show how recent conditions compare to the range of monthly rainfall amounts measured in the historical record. The entire period of record is used to estimate the maximum, minimum, and mean monthly rainfall.
