Agricultural Research Service (ARS) Scientist Attends Regional Meeting on Soybean Pest Management

 

     On April 2-3, Kim Hoelmer, entomologist, ARS Beneficial Insects Introduction Research Unit (BIIRU), Newark, DE, attended the annual S-1010 Multistate Regional Project Meeting on Soybean Pest Management, in St. Louis, MO.  He provided an update on the BIIRU’s foreign exploration in Asia for new natural enemies of the soybean aphid and host-range evaluations in BIIRU’s quarantine laboratory.

 

 

 

Agricultural Research Service (ARS) Scientist Studies Asian Longhorned Beetle in China

 

   On April 1-14, Michael T. Smith, entomologist, ARS Beneficial Insects Introduction Research Unit, Newark, DE, is in China to complete scientific plans, select study sites, and secure personnel for field experiments on Asian longhorned beetle (ALB) that are slated for 2006.  During this trip, he will meet with colleagues at the ARS Sino-American Biological Control Laboratory, the Institute of Botany within the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the Institute of Plant Protection within the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences.  Other meetings are also scheduled to finalize arrangements for studies on ALB population suppression with insecticides, development of an attract-and-kill strategy, detection with sentinel trees and artificial lures, and invasion biology.
