Dr. Jorge F.S. Ferreira

Dr. Jorge F.S. Ferreira was born in BelĂ©m, Northern Brazil in May 1960. He obtained a BS in Agronomy in 1983 and a MS in Agriculture/Fruticulture in 1985. He worked in research and extension in south-central Brazil until 1989. He left for a Ph.D. degree at Purdue University, graduating in Horticulture (plant physiology and biochemistry) in 1994. Dr. Ferreira worked as a phytochemist and plant physiologist for the USDA-ARS in Stoneville, MS from 1995 to 1998, then as an analytical chemist for Bayer CropSciences from 1998-2002. He left industry to teach phytochemistry and plant biology at Southern Illinois University (2002-2003). Dr. Ferreira joined the USDA-ARS in Beaver, WV as a horticulturist in December 2003. His research involves the identification of medicinal plants and their biologically-active secondary metabolites to control gastro-intestinal parasites in small ruminants. Dr. Ferreira is known worldwide for cultivation of Artemisia annua, and for extraction and analysis (HPLC, GC) of artemisinin and its related compounds.
