Research Project: GLOBAL BYDV/CYDV SEQUENCING PROJECT

Location: Biological Integrated Pest Management Unit

Project Number: 1907-22000-018-04
Project Type: Reimbursable

Start Date: Jul 01, 2004
End Date: Feb 14, 2008

Objective:
The objective of this cooperative research project is to determine the biological and molecular diversity of the barley yellow dwarf viruses on a global scale.

Approach:
Isolates of viruses causing barley yellow dwarf disease will be sent to Ithaca from worldwide and U.S. collaborators. Viruses will be transmitted to several host plants and maintained in the greenhouse for long term studies. In Ithaca, virus isolates will be characterized with respect to aphid transmission phenotype and serological properties. Isolates with unique biological properties will be sent to project collaborators in Iowa and Indiana for further characterization.
