Methods
Direct detection of pathogens
The Ohio Water Microbiology Laboratory (OWML) has adapted methods for the
detection/enumeration of Bacillus anthracis, Burkholderia cepacia,
Cryptosporidium parvum, Francisella tularensis, and Vibrio cholerae using qPCR.
Ultrafiltration is being used for the concentration of these organisms from
water (Morales-Morales and others, 2003). Additionally, the OWML is currently
testing a qPCR protocol for adenovirus and quantitative reverse-transcriptase
polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) protocols for enterovirus and norovirus.
Glass-wool filtration is being used for the concentration of viruses from water
(Lambertini and others, 2008). |
