Shelekhov Town Administration Inspired by Public-Private Partnership

Beginning on April 16, a “Week of Good Deeds” was sponsored by the USAID-SUAL Global Development Alliance (GDA) program in the town of Shelekhov, Irkutskaya Oblast'. The USAID-SUAL GDA is a unique public private-partnership aimed at encouraging civic activism in small towns where SUAL, one of Russia’s largest aluminum producers, is the main industry. The events were organized by local activists, involved both adults and children, and included a town clean-up project, an anti-drug campaign, free legal and psychological consultations, and several fundraising activities for various local charities. Initially, the local administration did not support the week’s events, but officials were so impressed with the results that they have now contributed funds for future community development project grants. The “Week of Good Deeds” organizers have also raised money from local businesses and other donors to help continue civic activities in Shelekhov.
