Gas Makes Refugee Homes Happier in North Ossetia

In June 2007, more than 20 refugee families from Georgia, Tajikistan, and North Ossetia were at last able to boil water for tea in their homes. Thanks to a USAID-funded program that brought a gas pipeline to a remote village in North Ossetia as part of a new housing development project, these families now have functioning kitchens. The program is managed by USAID-funded NGO Children’s Fund of North Ossetia, with the joint cooperation of the Russian Government, UNHCR, the Danish Refugee Counsel, and local company Alaniagas.

Refugees were happy and relieved to finally have gas in their homes. “Gas for our family is a joy first and foremost. I am glad that our new house is provided with gas. Now I can bake pies and cook hot dishes,” said Raisa Tsekoeva, a Tajik refugee. The completion of the project coincided with International Refugee Day, which is celebrated on June 20.
