It sounds like the issue of reading method arouses much passion on all
sides. Being the moderator of this discussion forum, I would like us to look
at the accountability aspects of phonics vs whole language vs mix & match.
First, let me give you my background in this area.
Vermont Adult Learning has provided training for me in the areas of LD
(assessment, teaching technique, and accommodation), and Wilson phonics
method. I am not a reading specialist, spending most of my time with
computer basics, GED, and college prep. I have a few early LD readers. What
I tend to do with them involves whole reading, because 1) They seem to hate
phonics, 2) I'm not that good at it, and 3)(here's the accountability part)
I cannot devote the time needed to do good phonics-based teaching, which
takes more time consuming intense, one on one interaction. With a tiny staff
of teachers, a constant stream of GED, ABE, college prep students, and a
separate influx of Welfare Reform participants, I may have an hour or two
per week to devote to an early reader(they also have time constraints-most
of them work full time). Where does the weight of my accountability lie? I'm
sure many of you have similar situations; small staff, more learners, more
mandates from above. How do you keep all the pie plates up in the air? RS
