Jeanette,
Here are a few other ideas on how to get training to become an adult
literacy teacher:
Many states have literacy resource centers, many of which offer
training; what state do you live in? (So I can provide contact
information).

You might also think about becoming a volunteer literacy tutor:
Literacy Volunteers of America-affiliates and Laubach affiliates offer
training to their volunteers.

If you have access to the Internet, you might go to the National
Institute for Literacy web site, which has links with regional web
sites. You can find information on training opportunities there.

My personal bias is that we adult literacy teachers should have a
solid grounding in reading theory and teaching methodology, whether we
get it via traditional university courses or a combination of reading,
workshops, etc. So don't discount courses at universities. (I've
gotten good reading lists from courses I've never taken, as well!)

I live in the midwest and am very interested in finding out where I
can get
training to become a literacy teacher or specialist.

Right now I am just starting in facilitating "literacy through book
arts"
workshops. This is an extremely compelling concept, which combines
creating a
physical book from a single sheet of paper and then writing and
illustrating
a story within its pages. I've experimented and read and researched
on my own.

However, I would like to know where to specifically get more literacy

training.

Thank you.
