Colleagues,

While those of you may be aware of the disappearance of the NLA
archives, it has come to my attention that someone is purging other
NIFL archives - at least, as far as I've been able to tell, the
archive of this very list.
I believe the rest of you should be aware of purge on this list. So
for example, if you go to http://novel.nifl.gov/nifl-womenlit/2003/
and check out the archives for the year 2003, you will notice that
messages are sorted by number. So for example, you will see:

[NIFL-WOMENLIT:2577] New CAAL publication on EFF Gail Spangenberg
(Mon May 12 2003 - 16:45:18 EDT)
[NIFL-WOMENLIT:2576] Re: outcome of conversation with husband Robert
Stein (Mon May 12 2003 - 12:29:49 EDT)
[NIFL-WOMENLIT:2575] Re: outcome of conversation with husband Mary
Lou Sewell (Mon May 12 2003 - 10:50:00 EDT)

However, if you scroll down, you will notice that there are gaps
between certain numbers and certain posts have been purged from the
archives. For example:

[NIFL-WOMENLIT:2539] New Practice Application Briefs from ERIC/ACVE
Judy Wagner (Mon Mar 24 2003 - 10:09:42 EST)
[NIFL-WOMENLIT:2536] RE: GOING TO COABE? REGISTER FOR NIFL's LINCS
PreConference Maralit, Mary Jo (Wed Mar 19 2003 - 17:41:54 EST)
[NIFL-WOMENLIT:2535] Re: Happy International Women's Day! Ujwala
Samant (Fri Mar 07 2003 - 20:53:28 EST)

As you can see, posts 2537 and 2538 are missing. I hope that others
will join me in outrage that messages are being purged and demand an
explanation. Who is doing this and why? Is free speech no longer
protected, or is this being slowly eroded as it seems to be in other
areas: (NASA's libraries being purged; CDC's fact sheet about condoms
being purged and only after public outcry was it reposted with anti
condom messages added; Congress voting on whether ERIC should be
restricted to "preapproved lists" etc., etc., etc.) Why are we
allowing this to happen?
Next steps? Suggestions?
