New Space Tourism Venture Launches in New Mexico

We may not all get to grow up to be astronauts, but a new operation based in New Mexico plans to give people their chance to briefly touch the stars. Rocket Racing, Inc. and Armadillo Aerospace have created a joint venture to base their fleet of re-usable Vertical Take-off and Landing (VTOL) space tourism vehicles in New Mexico at Spaceport America. In just two short years, the companies are hoping to begin manned flights, with a prototype to be tested next year.

Passengers will experience the sensation of weightless travel while floating in a cabin that offers breathtaking 360-degree views of earth from space. The initial target price range for this unparalleled opportunity is set at $100,000 or less.

Besides personal spaceflight, the vehicles will also perform many diverse tasks, including micro-gravity experiments, astrophysics observations, reconnaissance, and high-altitude scientific and meteorological measurements.

Operational responsibilities will be divided between the various partnership entities. Spaceport America will provide the base of operations for the venture, including launch capabilities. The reusable launch vehicles and ground support will be provided by Amarillo Aerospace. Rocket Racing Technology Development, a wholly owned subsidiary of Rocket Racing, Inc., will provide the financing for, and operational management of, the partnership. A yet to be named third party will be handling the marketing and reservations of the flights.

Governor Bill Richardson praised the decision, stating, “I am honored that Rocket Racing, Inc. and Armadillo Aerospace have chosen New Mexico to set up shop. Spaceport America and the State of New Mexico are proud partners and together we are writing the next chapter of space transportation.”
