$74 Million Awarded to Tribal Programs Promoting Mental Health, Preventing and Treating Substance Abuse, and Supporting Recovery

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) awarded grants in fiscal year 2008 that are projected to provide more than $74 million in grants to federally recognized tribes or tribal organizations serving the mental health and substance abuse prevention and treatment needs of American Indian and Alaska Native populations. Continuation awards will be subject to the availability of funds and progress achieved by the grantees.

These newly awarded grants are in addition to more than $65 million in grant funding that SAMHSA made available to tribal service providers for grants that were awarded during fiscal year 2007.  Two years ago, SAMHSA initiated a new policy geared toward expanding tribal eligibility for more grant programs. Grants were awarded to 20 tribal service organizations in fiscal year 2007 and 18 tribal service organizations across the country in fiscal year 2006. This fiscal year, 39 tribal service organizations received grants.

"The more than $74 million that SAMHSA has made available to tribal service providers highlights our belief that funding should go directly to those on the frontlines – those in the tribal communities," said SAMHSA Acting Administrator Eric Broderick, D.D.S., M.P.H.  "Through our Tribal Initiative, SAMHSA has succeeded in increasing resources available to American Indian and Alaska Native communities to address critical needs."   Broderick made the announcement at the  National Congress of American Indians (NCAI) conference in Phoenix.  

The grants support a wide range of culturally relevant programs for promoting better mental health, substance abuse prevention and treatment and recovery support.  Information on the grantees and the programs that will be funded is available at: www.samhsa.gov/tribal/08grantees.aspx.



SAMHSA is a public health agency within the Department of Health and Human Services. The agency is responsible for improving the accountability, capacity and effectiveness of the nation's substance abuse prevention, addictions treatment, and mental health services delivery system.
