Deadline for submitting abstracts/research needs: July 15, 2004
Deadline for Workshop registration: September 3, 2004

The U. S. Geological Survey is planning a scientific workshop on the Suwannee River Basin and Estuary to:
  1. discuss current and past research findings,
  2. identify information gaps and research priorities, and
  3. develop an action plan for coordinated and relevant research activities in the future.

This workshop will build on the highly successful basin-wide conference sponsored by the Suwannee Basin Interagency Alliance that was held three years ago in Live Oak, Florida. This year’s workshop will focus on identifying information needs and priorities and developing partnerships. The USGS is seeking to define the role of the USGS Florida Integrated Science Center (FISC) in conducting integrated research in the Suwannee River Basin, and to establish a cooperative program with other agencies.

Participants interested in river, floodplain, springs, estuary, or basin-wide issues are encouraged to attend. Topics for this year’s workshop will include:

  1. water quality and geochemistry: nutrient enrichment, reduction of nutrient loading to ground water, contaminants, and land use,
  2. hydrogeology: interactions among ground water, surface water and ecosystem, modeling, and baseline mapping,
  3. ecosystem dynamics: structure, process, species, and habitats (estuarine, riverine, floodplain, and wetland), and
  4. information management: data sharing, database development, geographic information system (GIS), and basin-wide models.

We are soliciting one-page abstracts of current or recent research in the Suwannee River Basin to be published in the workshop proceedings. Corresponding posters may be displayed at the workshop. Please also consider submitting a short and provisional summary of information gaps, research priorities, or proposal concepts to the workshop coordinators. The deadline for submission of abstracts/research needs is July 15, 2004. Workshop proceedings will contain abstracts, information needs and research priorities, and plans for partnered research activities.

This workshop is co-sponsored by: U.S. Geological Survey, Suwannee River Water Management District and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission - Florida Marine Research Institute.
