Projects and Opportunities

Afghan Government

The Afghan government proposed these natural resources projects for the Afghan year 1383 (March 2004-March 2005) development budget.

In October 2002, the Ministry of Water and Power identified six dam and irrigation priority projects.

U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID)

Rehabilitation of Economic Facilities and Service (REFS) Program
Louis Berger

 

The Louis Berger Group is providing engineering, design, construction management and other services to implement USAID's Rehabilitation of Economic Facilities and Service (REFS) Program. Under this contract, Afghanistan's major and rural roads are being reconstructed to improve economic growth, security, and political integration along the corridor linking Afghanistan's three largest cities: Kabul, Kandahar and Herat. The REFS program is also rehabilitating irrigation systems, dams, power generation and schools and clinics.

Rebuilding Agricultural Markets Program (RAMP)
Chemonics

 

USAID contracted with Chemonics to implement the Rebuilding Agricultural Markets Program (RAMP), a three-year program aimed at enhancing the good security and incomes of Afghanistan's rural population. It has two principal objectives: to increase agricultural productivity and output, and to facilitate effective linkages between producers, processors and markets. This includes improving irrigation for 310,000 hectares of farmland and repairing 233 irrigation structures.

Other projects:

Provided a grant of $33,405 to build a 2,500-meter stone masonry canal, which is bringing green fields and families back to the Fatmasti Valley of Bamyan Province.

World Bank

Emergency Infrastructure Reconstruction Project ($33 Million)
Supports rehabilitation of urgently needed water supply and sanitation in secondary cities, sanitation in Kabul.

Emergency Public Works and Community Empowerment Project ($42 Million)
This project that aims to revitalize villages and neighborhoods, includes an employment program to rehabilitate irrigation systems and canal systems.

Asian Development Bank

 

Emergency Infrastructure Rehabilitation and Reconstruction ☺§(2.9MB PDF only) ($150 million)
In May 2003, the Asian Development Bank approved this loan to restore roads, power, and gas infrastructure in Afghanistan.
