Other activities:

$150 million Rebuilding Afghanistan's Agricultural Markets Program (160KB PDF only)

In February 2003, USAID announced $60 million initiative to rebuild the educational infrastructure of Afghanistan. The main aspect will be the rehabilitation and construction of 1,000 schools across the country over the next three years.

USAID supported over 225 spot reconstruction projects such as government buildings, schools, roads, bridges, irrigation systems and other community projects.

Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC)

In February 2003, OPIC pledged support for construction of a five-star hotel in Kabul, managed by Hyatt International. Anticipates using $35 million for financing and political risk insurance toward the project.

In February 2003, OPIC pledged to provide $35,000 in insurance to enable Vermeer Manufacturing Company to donate a compressed earth block machine for the construction of 3 schools, at least one of which is an all girl's school.

U.S. Trade and Development Agency (TDA)

In 2002, TDA provided funding for a feasibility study of hotel opportunities in Kabul that led to the OPIC-financed Hyatt Hotel project.

World Bank

Emergency Public Works and Community Empowerment Project ($42 million)
This provides funding for infrastructure improvements and housing reconstruction in villages throughout Afghanistan.

Asian Development Bank

Emergency Infrastructure Rehabilitation and Reconstruction ($150 million)
In May 2003, the Asian Development Bank approved this loan to restore roads, power, and gas infrastructure in Afghanistan.
